Welcome and Introduction!
Global Entrepreneurship Week
November 17 to 23 is Global Entrepreneurship Week in Canada and around the World!
"For one week, millions of young people around the world will join a growing movement of entrepreneurial people to generate new ideas and to seek better ways of doing things. Dozens of countries are coming together for the first time to host Global Entrepreneurship Week, an initiative to inspire young people to embrace innovation, imagination and creativity. To think big. To turn their ideas into reality. To make their mark."[1]
In the spirit of Global Entrepreneurship Week, Mount Royal's Entrepreneurship 2201 students are competing in Mount Royal's very own Innovation Tournament.

Background: Stanford's Tournament
Entrepreneurship Week provides the context for this challenge. Now let's take a look at the inspiration behind the tournament itself: Stanford University ran its first Global Innovation Tournament in 2006. In that, their first year, they introduced the idea of a challenge in which teams compete to create as much value as possible from everyday items.
For a good introduction, check out the following documentary film introducing the Stanford Competition:
Sure, sounds great. But how do I create value from an everyday object?
How does it really turn out when student teams are let loose on this sort of challenge? Check out the following incredibly motivating videos showing past winners of the Stanford competition:
- Rubber bands:
You can find many more examples:
- From Stanford's 2008 Innovation Tournament
- From around the World at the Stanford Tournament's YouTube Group.
The Mount Royal Innovation Tournament
You won't actually compete in Stanford's tournament, but like that tournament, Mount Royal's is an apprentice-style competition in which you are challenged to create as much value as possible from an ordinary object.
What's the deal (FAQ)?
Who's eligible?
Working in groups of 4-5, all students taking ENTR 2201 in the Fall 2008 semester will compete in the tournament.
What's the goal?
To create as much value as possible using an everyday object (to be announced).
What's the mystery object?
That won't be announced until the end of the kickoff event. After that you can find a description of the object here.
How long do we have?
The tournament runs from November 12, 2008, to November 25, 2008:
- The tournament start tonight
- Every section will have two classes during which to work on their projects and during which their instructors will provide assistance
- The semi finals will take place during your regular class time class on November 24 or 25th (see the Detailed Directions below for the schedule for your section)
- The finals will take place on November 25
How is "value" defined?
That's a good question and one of the toughest parts of this challenge.
Since it's your job to create value out of almost nothing at all, it's also your job to decide how you're going to do it. Your team also has to decide how you'll measure the value your create and how you'll communicate that value to others.
Check out the assessment criteria for more on how this will be judged.
What do we have to submit?
Nothing other than:
- one 3-minute video submission for your team
OR:
- one 3-minute presentation to be made by your team
Your submission must be 3 minutes or less. If you choose a presentation instead of a video, your team must make that presentation at both the semifinals and the finals. If you choose a video instead of a presentation, it must be submitted on a DVD at the time of your section's semifinals.
Other than that, there are no rules about your submission.
Having said that, be sure to check out the assessment criteria to guide your activities and the Making a Great Presentation section below if you choose to make a presentation.
What do we get if we win?
The three top teams will get an extra 5% added their final mark in ENTR 2201.
$300 will be awarded to the top team to be directed toward a charity of the teams choosing through GiveMeaning
How will I be assessed?
As described in your course outline under "Entrepreneurial Experience Project Task 1" your performance in this tournament is worth 15% of your overall grade in ENTR 2201.
Each of your classmates will judge your team's submission using the following judging criteria:
Your instructor will obtain your 15% from the average of these results.
As discussed above, the top three teams in the finals get an additional 5% added to their mark in ENTR 2201.

Making a Great Presentation
