Introduction and Motivation

(Why learn it)

The eBay Challenge will put you into a situation similar to one that is faced by most entrepreneurial management or project teams in the real world. There will be lots going on in a compressed time frame, a short window of opportunity, limited resources and you will hit speed bumps along the way. Keeping everything organized will be important to ensure there is proper communication amongst your team members, understand how well your team is executing its plan and support team success at the completion of the challenge.

The Team Project Binder is used to collect all project documents in an orderly and concise manner, draw conclusions from the information and develop entrepreneurial insights. It will be a living set of documents and reports that will help keep the team on track and current in the execution of its strategies throughout the Challenge.

Key Sections of the Team Project Binder

Executive Summary

Team project binders will include a 1-2 page succinct summary of the team's experience during The eBay Challenge. Both quantitative information and qualitative observations of the team's learning experience would be included.

Your supplier information and activity

This section should give a brief overview of each supplier whom the team procured product from. The overview should include company or individual information, key contact data, and any other information that you feel is relevant. All consignment agreements sent to the project COO will be included here. Remember these are your suppliers whose products you are using to satisfy your customer demands in the eBay market.

The Sales Process

Here you will be substantiating your team’s sales cycle, cash collection process, product delivery and payment to your suppliers. Clear documentation of all aspects of the above is critical. You may want to break this section down into sub-sections with appropriate summaries for each subsection.

  • Administrative Procedures:

Documentation that supports the closing of team eBay and email accounts is to be included in this section of the binder

Income Statement

Your team's Income Statement must be included here with any relevant notes. All teams are required to develop an income statement regardless if any sales were achieved. Teams that fail to generate a sales transaction will be required to include a report entitled the “Non-Transaction Report:

  • Non-Transaction Report: If your team failed to execute a sales transaction you will be required to write a 3-5 page report outlining reasons as to why the team failed to execute on its project strategy. Remember that the eBay challenge is an experiential learning exercise. There is lots of learning that happens when we fail at something, which makes the eBay challenge a successful exercise for all students who are fundamentally committed to learning. If sales didn’t happen have a look at all aspects of your strategy; markets, pricing, team organization etc. Be reflective in this report. All team members must sign the bottom of the report indicating that there was agreement on the report findings.

Organizational Tips

Professional business writing and organization is required for your binder. Table of contents, section tabs etc. are but a few of the items to consider. Teams should develop summaries for all sections. Information that is voluminous in nature should be included as appendices and appropriately referenced. Remember to properly cite any third party information. Lastly a hard copy of the team’s market research report should be included as an appendix in your binder.
